Food Deserts

In collaboration with the San Francisco-based mapping studio Stamen, this project visualizes access to affordable food in Brooklyn. Sparked by a return to the borough, we were struck by how few supermarkets served entire neighborhoods—especially in both the highest- and lowest-income areas. Instead, many residents rely on bodegas for daily groceries. We plotted supermarket locations across Brooklyn, layering in income data and pedestrian likelihood. The glow around each point suggests walkability—because in a city like New York, where most people get around on foot, proximity isn’t optional.
